Welcome Baby Tiernan!

The world is a brighter place today!  Tiernan Patrick McCarty made his debut tonight at 5:13 pm, weighing 7 pounds, 2 ounces, and measuring in at 19 inches!  He is perfect, and Parenthood is amazing!

Our Birth Story

After Jeremy and Candy left, it was time to head to the hospital.  That 4 mile drive took forever.  I was suddenly full of doubts, and not feeling ready for this at all.  Shawn was so much calmer than me.  We checked in at 9 pm, and the nurse put us in our Labor and Delivery room.  They wasted no time in getting everything going.  I guess that was good, because I totally felt like running away at one point.  Once I had my flattering gown on and got settled in the bed, the nurse hooked up all the monitors and got my IV going.  The IV in the hand hurt so bad!  They use an 18 gauge needle.  It was insane!  They also had a heartrate monitor on the baby, a contraction monitor on me, and the stupid blood pressure cuff.  That thing was so annoying.

Once we got all hooked up, it was game time!  The nurse checked me, and I was at a 1.  She put the cytotek in to start the induction, and then, we wait!  I knew that I was supposed to try to sleep and rest for the big delivery day, but all my nerves were going crazy.  Around 10:30 I told Shawn I was going to be sick.  The nurse brought me a big container to puke in, and I think I threw up the entire pizza that we had eaten earlier.  The nurse said it was nerves, and not the medication, but I have always reacted strongly and quickly to meds, so I disagree.  Not that it matters.

I think I finally fell asleep around midnight, but only for short spurts of time.  They induced me because of high blood pressure, and every 15 minutes the machine took it again, and every time it sounded an alarm because it was so high.  The nurse showed Shawn how to turn off the alarm, and that meant that every 15 minutes we both woke up.  It was really annoying.

Around 1:30 the nurse came in to check on me again.  She said that my lab results came back bad, but not REALLY bad, and the doctor decided not to complete the induction.  They wanted to send me home in the morning and keep me pregnant longer.  I was so mad.  I asked the nurse how they stop the induction, and she said they just weren't going to give me the second dose at 2 am like planned, and that I wasn't having contractions yet so I probably wouldn't make much progress anyways, so they want me to stay pregnant until at least 38 weeks.  I was currently 37 weeks, and 6 days. They wanted to cancel this over one day.  Ugh.  I asked the nurse what was hurting me if I wasn't having contractions.  She said the monitor wasn't picking up contractions, so I shouldn't be hurting.  She checked the monitors on my belly, and apparently when you lay on your side, they don't pick up the contractions that well.  When she moved them, the monitor started showing I WAS having contractions.  She said if they continued, the doctor might have to keep me and finish it out, but we would skip the 2 am medication.

Around 430 or 5 the contractions got really bad. I remember sitting up on the bed almost ready to crawl out of my body.  It was the worst cramps ever.  I woke Shawn up and we called the nurse.  She gave me some stadol to help the pain and I managed to go back to sleep.

Ahh, pain killers.

The doctor came in at 9 am and told us she wanted to send me home.  I told her that I really didn't want to stop the induction, even though I had wanted a natural labor at home originally.  They already induced, I didn't want to go natural and then end up with a c-section or something so that we could cover all three options in one labor.  She checked me, and I had progressed to a 2, so she agreed to keep me.  We started the pitocin at 9 am!

At 10:30 things really picked up, and I asked for my epidural.  With all the other machines and wires, no point trying to go natural anymore.  It's not like I could walk around and do anything to focus on getting through the pain.  At 11 they broke my water, and I was at a 4.  Then things kind of stalled.

Even in labor, windows has updates.

At 4 pm, the nurse checked me and I was at a 6.  She said that it would be several more hours, so people started saying goodbye.  Tish came in first to tell us bye, and wow, that was all it took!  While she was in the room, at 4:45, I started feeling some really weird, new pains.  I kept pushing the epidural button, and nothing was happening.  It was such a strange feeling.  I called the doctor and she said she would come check, but by 5, I was really hurting, and Tiernan's heartbeat on the monitor was jumping all over the place.  Shawn called the nurse back, since she had never come the first time, and she said everything was fine and that she was watching on the monitors.  Shawn told her to "get her a** in here.  He was very upset.  The nurse came in around 5:05 with an "it's nothing but I'll check on you to appease you" attitude.  When she pulled up the blanket to check on me though, everything changed.  She didn't even have to check me, she could see Tiernan was coming.  She goes, "Oh, we're having a baby!" and ninjas started coming out of the walls!  The room filled up with staff, they kicked Tish out, and the doctor came in putting on gear.  Three good pushes and he was out at 5:13 pm!

Tiernan wasn't crying, he just had his eyes open, looking all around.  Doctor Hearne said he was still breathing through umbilical cord and had Shawn cut it.  They took him to the warmer to work on him, and he started doing donkey cries.  The nurse told him to "Cry like a human" and then we got some real cries.

Because of the lack of breathing, Tiernan's APGAR was a 2 at first, but his 5 minute APGAR was an 8.

Finally, I got to hold my son.  He is so perfect.
